Jargon in professional writing

Jargon is widely used in professional writing. Definition of a jargon is language that is used by a group, profession, or culture, especially when the words and phrases are not understood or used by other people. On many occasions people think of jargon as a style that is unintelligible. Jargon is commonly used by groups that have similar interests, professions, and trades. Jargon can be used in a form of writing or communication. Which ever way it is used there will be a population of people who will either understand it or not.

Positive aspects of using jargon in writing:

Using jargon in a professional writing makes it easier for a person read through the information if he/she already has the knowledge of the topic. This makes it easier to communicate with their fellow workers and friends. People use jargon to impress other people in situations like job interviews, class discussions, and meetings. For people with the same profession it is a universal language that is used to communicate with each other.

Negative aspects of using jargon:

Jargon can make a person feel very confused on what he/she is reading if they don’t have the knowledge of the topic. It is unprofessional to write a letter using jargon when you are in a business environment. Jargon can make a person come out as lazy and unproductive in a working environment.

  1. I really enjoyed the video clip. That is a very nice addition. I believe the negative "side effects" of using jargon could potentially be over powering depending on one's employer. The negative effects of making the individual seem lazy and unproductive could really hinder its use.

  2. Ervin, that video was a very nice touch to your blog. Good job on explaining both the goods and the bads of using jargon in professional writing. I can agree with the fact that if the subject is not well known to the reader, then its not a good idea to use it.

  3. I enjoyed reading about this topic as I have experienced both the negative and positive sides of using jargon. It is very difficult to understand if you don't know any facts about the topic your reading about, and it can be very frustrating at the same time. I liked the addition of the video as it changed things up and you didn't have to just read, you had a good visual as well.

  4. As dumb as this may sound, before I read your post I didn't even realize what jargon actually was. Before, I thought it was just unintelligible words, but now I understand that it's basically just slang, but slang that refers to a specific group of people or professionals. Thanks for the clarification.

  5. When using Jargon, it think it is so important to keep in mind who you are talking to. In my work, we have our own language and acronyms that we use on a constant basis. If there were outsiders that came in, hearing, they would have no idea what it is we were talking about. I appreciate you pointing out the negatives and positives. This gives a different perspective.

  6. Nice post, Ervin. You have some grammatical mistakes and some capitalization errors in your subject heading. However, you gave us useful information and I liked your video.
